Despite the higher price, the KitchenAid grinders offer good value for money. They are extremely well made and constructed, with good design benefiting the easy use. The motor is fitted on the side of the grinder, away from the "business end" where the ground coffee is. This means that it's easy to clean, and coffee won't get stuck in any areas you wouldn't want it to be. It simply falls into the (removable) container below, ready for you to use quickly and easily. The motor is powerful and the burr grinders big and solid (made from stainless steel) so this grinder sets about making perfect, evenly ground coffee in just a few seconds. The burrs are adjustable, should you want to make the coffee grind finer (or more course). Plus the KitchenAid grinders are so stylish too - they have this great retro look to them which really catches the eye. They are solid, robust and functional, yet stylish and meant to be seen. So don't put yours away in a cupboard somewhere - leave it out on the worktop where everyone can see it!
Why are Burr Grinders considered the best coffee grinders?
There are several types of coffee grinders available, but there are two main types of electrical grinders available; either a blade grinder or a burr grinder. Blade grinders are usually cheaper and smaller. They work by "chopping" the coffee beans with the blades they have inside, which spin at high speed. This works well, but for many coffee experts, chopping the beans means they lose something in flavour. Burr grinders, however, crush the beans between two steel burrs. Machine with "conical burrs" are especially thought to give a better, more even grind, compared to the blade grinders. Since the burr grinder crushes or presses the beans under its burrs, the result is a more even and finer grind.
